Amex Centurion Lounge London Heathrow T3 (breakfast) Food and Nutrition Review

I had heard many good things about the food in the recently opened Amex Centurion Lounge London Heathrow T3 and so when I was flying out of Heathrow I just had to make sure I tried the food. And absolutely it did not disappoint! I was lucky to be there across the change over from breakfast to lunch/dinner and so I was able to review both menus. I always review a breakfast menu separately to a lunch/dinner menu as I have different nutrition criteria and so I will write up two reviews for this lounge. Up first is the review of breakfast which was delicious and great food quality. So with great quality food how does the nutrition stack up?

There were many healthy options available for breakfast across both cold and hot buffets, with the middle eastern fusion cuisine providing delicious and nutrient rich dishes.

What’s Healthy?

  • Fresh fruit is always a welcome sight at an airport lounge breakfast but what’s even better is when there is also a fresh salad made with vegetables. So you can imagine how excited I was to see this beetroot, apple and pear salad. Beetroots are just brimming with healthy bioactives from the purple colour. And not only was it healthy but it was also delicious. The flavours from the horseradish and almonds, together with beetroot, apples and pears were just sensational.

  • Just look at the variety of yogurts, muesli and chia puddings. Big tick having plain yogurt available. Some lounges have yogurts but with a fruit coulis on top which adds sugar so it was great to see this lounge have both options (as absolutely some people do like something a little sweeter sometimes).

  • Now I hear your ask how are sausages and bacon in the ‘healthy’ section – well they are not. I just unfortunately got a picture with all the hot dishes in it and I didn’t want to edit the image as I wanted you to see how the buffet is served. So… the dishes here I wanted to highlight as being good options are the eggplant (aubergine), baked beans, and egg and vegetable muffins. I must make a special call out to the eggplant dish – this was absolutely amazing. The eggplant was grilled and came with a tahini and raspberry salsa, and a pistachio dukkha.

Healthy dishes from the hot buffet include eggplant (aubergine), baked beans, egg frittatas, potatoes
  • Poached eggs for breakfast are a great nutrient bundle and so when I saw Shakshuka was on the menu I was even more delighted. A baked egg in a tomato and red pepper stew has even more nutrients. Tomatoes and red peppers have many healthy properties including being sources of vitamin C and lycopene.

Not so great. Caution.

  • Croissants and other pastries are high in calories and can be easy to over eat. Be careful with choosing these types of foods at a buffet as it can be tempting to choose more than one. And remember you are getting on a plane next which means sitting down (for some of you for many hours) and so burning off these calories can be challenging.

  • The bar snacks are also easy to over eat and don’t really offer any benefit to nutrition intake – so during the breakfast period go for less processed foods that are packed with nutrients . And re-think whether a snack so early in the day is really necessary or if you just want some because you see them on the bar.

  • The streaky bacon and pork sausages on the hot buffet are fatty processed meats which should be limited in the diet.

Last word from travel food and nutrition review for Amex Centurion Lounge London Heathrow T3

The food in the Amex Centurion Lounge London Heathrow T3 is fantastic and next time I am travelling out of T3 in Heathrow I would consider going to this lounge for the food (regardless of whether I am travelling on a Oneworld airline and have access to all Oneworld lounges). The Middle Eastern fusion cuisine provided both flavoursome and nutritious foods on the breakfast buffet menu. And the quality of the food was also great – see below the beautifully baked egg in the Shakshuka even though it was sitting on the buffet.

The Centurion Lounge included a number of signs related to nutrition including the calorie content of each meal. There was also a sign alerting people with allergies/intolerances to speak with a member of staff. What was interesting was there was a specific point made to people who visit the lounge frequently to continually ask staff regarding the appropriateness of dishes as their ingredients mat change.  What was interesting regarding the calorie count sign was that calories were expressed as per 100g serving instead of a suggested serve size. It can be hard to determine how much 100g is.
