My little frequent flyer’s (4 years old) first experience of a Qantas Child Meal was flying Fiji to Sydney in business class. I was very interested to see what he would be served (as was he!). This was a 4pm flight and and so an early dinner service for the little frequent flyer. And I have to say I was jealous… his meal was better than my meal!
Main Meal Service
Just after takeoff my little frequent flyer was offered a drink and was given the same packet of nuts and roasted corn as the adults in business class. He chose an orange juice which the crew brought swiftly. At the start of the business class meal service the cabin crew served the little frequent flyer a tray with the cold dishes on it. It was a 737 and so for business class passengers it was a trolley service for the meals, but they served his meal without the hot meal first and then brought the hot dish a little later after serving the other passengers. The tray came out with chopped fruit, a garden salad, a berry cake, crackers (no cheese) and a chocolate bar. The hot meal was chicken schnitzel, mashed potatoes and peas. And he really liked it. I tried some of the chicken which was crunchy and moist – I was amazed it wasn’t soggy. Pretty impressive and the little frequent flyer liked it.

Nutrition Comment
There was a lot to like about the Qantas child meal. The salad and fruit salad served on the side was fantastic from a nutrition point of view. It provided lots of colour to the meal which is great for kids, encouraging them to eat vegetables and fruit. And while the little frequent flyer didn’t eat all of it he did pick at the salad and fruit salad for a bit before moving onto the peas (he loves peas!). All up he got more vegetables and fruit than I got in my adults meal – it was incredible to see actually.
Final word special meal Child Meal Qantas food flying Fiji to Sydney
The Qantas Child Meal served in business class flying Fiji to Sydney was great. I would have been happy getting it for my meal! While the side salad was impressive (and not even served to adults) I did find for my 4 year old it might have been better to serve a little more age appropriate vegetables (e.g. carrot sticks) as my little one had a bit of trouble with the lettuce (yes I know he is only 4 and other older kids may have been fine with it). But the hot meal was right up his alley and was great. Overall he liked it and I liked it too – all round good meal. I look forward to flying again and trialing a different route to see what the food is like for the little frequent flyer.
