American Airlines Admirals Club Nashville Food and Nutrition Review (breakfast)

Oh why did book such as early morning flight?! These were my thoughts as I made my way to Nashville airport for my 7.30am flight. And thankfully as I walked into the American Airlines Admirals Club Nashville the staff were cheery and helped me into the lounge as I wrangled my 2 year old. I was curious as to what the American Airlines Admirals Club Nashville was going to be like – Nashville isn’t a large airport and I had just come from Dallas where the Admirals Club (which isn’t a whole lot to write home about). At 6am in the morning the lounge was very quite, just us and a couple of others. The foods on offer were similar, but a smaller range than Dallas (to be expected with the size of the lounge/airport). It was good to see some nutritious staples on the buffet such as fruit, yogurt and eggs, there were also some foods which are not as nutritious which can be tempting.

Eggs, Chobani and fruit – the staples of the Admirals Club for breakfast

What’s nutritious?

  • Fantastic to see both whole fruit (bananas, oranges and apples) and chopped fruit (rockmelon (cantelope), blueberries and pineapple) were available at the buffet. My little two year old spotted the bananas and was instantly impressed lol. Having a range of fruit available for passengers is important while travelling as it provides fibre, bioactives, and vitamins and minerals which are all essential for good health.

  • Vanilla, blueberry and strawberry yogurt pots were available and I liked that the yogurts had individually packaged so the ingredients and nutritional information for each yogurt was visible (rather than placing it in a large bowl with no information). This is because while yogurt is generally a nutritious, some are healthier than others. The live cultures, high protein content and vitamins and minerals make yogurt a standout, however some yogurts are high in sugar and additives making them not as great for us. I found it hard to categorise this yogurt since sugar is the second ingredient behind milk. It would be better to also offer a plain yogurt variety as well to provide people with a choice of whether they would like sweetened or unsweetened.

  • I have to say these scrambled eggs did not seem very appealing – they just looked so dry in this pot. The sign described them as scrambled eggs with peppers and pepperjack cheese however as you can see from this picture there wasn’t many peppers in the pot which was a shame. I found they just didn’t seem to have the taste of freshly scrambled eggs – perhaps they were powdered????? And while pepperjack cheese was mentioned as an ingredient, I didn’t find they tasted very cheesy (not necessarily a bad thing as sometimes eggs can be overly cheesy) – but I just found them to taste like nothing. Thankfully there were also boiled eggs available – and gosh were they hard boiled!! They were very hard. Eggs are a nutritious food for travelling being high in protein and containing a range of vitamins and minerals such as choline, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D (one of the few foods to contain vitamin D), folate, vitamin E, the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, just to name a few.

  • A big pot of warm oatmeal was also on the buffet. Oatmeal can be nutritious as oats are a source of soluble fibre. However what is unknown here is exactly what is in the oatmeal and what type of oats it is made with.

Not so great. Caution.

  • Bagels, English muffins and pastries – all white, refined carbohydrates. There was one bagel which seemed to have sesame seeds on the top however that seemed to be the extent of any wholegrains or seeds.

  • There were three types of cereals on offer: Rice Krispies, Cinnamon Toast Crunch and a granola. These cereal have been placed in the caution section as even though they are advertised as being made from wholegrains, sugar is a prominent ingredient. Sugar is listed as the second ingredient in both Rice Krispies and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. The nutrition labels state that Rice Krispies have approximately 1 teaspoon of added sugar per serve (1.5 cups), which Cinnamon Toast Crunch has approximately 2-3 teaspoons of added sugar per serve (1 cup). The granola likely has some sort of sweetener as the cereal is in small clumps meaning something is sticking the oats together.

  • Brown sugar, banana chips and dried cranberries were available as toppings for the oatmeal. These are quite sweet toppings with brown sugar (obviously sweet as it is sugar), but banana chips usually contain added sugar and oil and dried cranberries are also usually a source of added sugar.

  • There was a container of bacon bits available. Bacon is a processed meat which is recommended to be limited in the diet.

Last word on American Airlines Admirals Club Nashville

The American Airlines Admirals Club Nashville served up a simple breakfast offerings with some nutritious wholefoods available, making it possible to have a nutritious breakfast. However with half the foods being sweet, refined carbohydrates it can also be tempting to eat these for breakfast which has the potential to deliver quite a bit of added sugar to a breakfast.

NOTE: All pictures of American Airlines Admirals Club Nashville are my own and I review the food from the foods available at the time I visited the lounge. There may be different options available at other times.
