Finally had a chance to check out The House Lounge Sydney Airport – and good timing since my curiosity was piqued when I heard British Airways lists it as an option for it’s passengers (being a Oneworld flyer I was scratching my head a bit as to why when Qantas’ flagships lounges are here). So anyway off I headed to The House Lounge Sydney Airport and gained access through my Priority Pass card. I had heard mixed views on the lounge so was curious to see what they were serving up for breakfast.
What’s Healthy?
- Not only were whole pieces of fresh fruit available (apples, pears and oranges on the day I visited) but there were also jars of sliced seasonal fruits. These jars of sliced fresh fruits were such a welcome sight as they provide some variety other than the standard pieces of whole fruit usually available in lounge. A great range of fruit to give an antioxidant boost before stepping on a plane.
- It was great to see the options of both plain yogurt and flavoured yogurts available. Yogurt is a nutritious fermented food – a source of protein, calcium, phosphorus, vitamins such as B2 and B12, and some contain probiotics. Yogurts flavoured with fruit coulis (like the passionfruit one here) add sweetness, and with sweetness comes added sugar, so if you choose the passionfruit pot then don’t have any other sweet foods while in the lounge.
- A range of hot foods were available on the buffet – very standard breakfast fare. Sweet potatoes with thyme were a little different which was great for some variety. And sweet potatoes are a source of beta-carotene which is an antioxidant and gives sweet potatoes its bright orange colour.
- Multigrain bread was available which was good to see – a great way to get some wholegrains.
Not so great. Caution.
- Ah the standard pastry selection for breakfast – Danish pastries, croissants and muffins. Having these for breakfast means you miss an opportunity to eat something more nutrient dense. If you like these, reconsider having them for breakfast and have half a one after choosing more nutritious foods.
- Sausages and bacon – fatty, processed meats which should only be eaten occasionally. If you fly often then rethink having these for every breakfast you pass through the lounge.
- Processed breakfast cereals like Nutrigrain, Rice Bubbles and Cornflakes are not necessarily the same as eating the grains in a more natural form. Fibre and other nutrients can be removed, and salt and sugars can be added. If you like cereals like these then try giving the cereal a boost by adding some colourful fresh fruit, nuts or seeds if available. Unfortunately I did not see any nuts or seeds in the lounge.
Last word from travel food and nutrition review for The House Lounge Sydney Airport
Nothing really exciting in The House Lounge Sydney Airport in terms of breakfast foods – pretty standard. You could make a fairly nutritious breakfast though – simple but healthy which was good to see.
