Virgin Australia Business Class Food and Nutrition Review – Brisbane to Melbourne, Australia

With new Virgin Australia Business Class food, I thought it was about time I check it out. I had seen many good things mentioned online regarding these meals and so I wanted to see for myself what they were like. So I flew domestically Melbourne to Brisbane return, checking out their lounges as well.

Here is my experience of Virgin Australia Business Class Brisbane to Melbourne.

Main Meal Service

First up, drinks were offered prior to take off (including bubbles). It was a long time since I had been offered an alcoholic drink prior to takeoff in a domestic flight as Qantas does not do this (and I mainly fly Qantas domestically). So this was nice to see as even if you don’t want an alcoholic drink prior to take off, it is just nice to see good service with variety offered to passengers.

There was a main meal service on this 2 hour flight with staff coming around just after takeoff taking drinks orders and offering the choice of two main meals. I was sitting in 2D and they had run out of one of the meal choices. Upon probing the staff further they had told me that the same number of each meals are not necessarily loaded on the flights e.g. on my flight they had 3 hot meals, and 5 cold salad meals loaded. So chicken salad it was for me. (Check out the main meal service provided on Virgin Business Class in my other blog.)

The chicken salad came with cheese and crackers on the side, and also a Kit Kat. However the Kit Kat was given to me and the passenger next to me because we did not have a choice of meal, so it was sort of like a sorry Kit Kat lol. On the flight to Brisbane the meal was served with a small chocolate heart and so I think that is what the Kit Kat replaced.

Nutrition Comment

Unfortunately I didn’t like it. I usually love chicken salad but I was disappointed with this one. There was a lot of dressing which I also found to be quite sweet. Also while the salad had peas, capsicum, carrot and baby spinach (which are all great vegetables) there wasn’t a lot of salad bulk in the dish- there was more rice and quinoa.

I did love that it wasn’t just rice though – mixing the rice with the quinoa was great. Quinoa has more protein and fibre than rice so adding quinoa to rice helps make it more nutritious.

The chicken was quite lean which was good, but it did have clear jelly on top which turned me off. Also I feel the grill lines may not have been real as one of the lines was in the chicken (see video below). This suggests the chicken was quite processed to get this uniform look (but happy to hear otherwise).

Overall the food offerings were okay. They were in line with other domestic business class offerings on the market here in Australia. I thought the service from the staff was standout and some of the best service I have experienced in quite a while which was great.

NOTE: All pictures of Virgin Australia Business Class flying on the 737 are my own and I review the food from the menu I was given and the food I ordered on my flight. There may be different options available at other times.
