Salads of the World: Waldorf Salad - Dietitians & Nutritionists - Nutted Out Nutrition

Back to America we go with our Salads of the World!

Introducing a Waldorf Salad. This salad takes it’s name from the famous hotel in the New York City: The Waldorf Hotel!

This salad consists of a mix between salad vegetables, fruit and nuts with a creamy style dressing such as mayonnaise or new variations may include a Greek yogurt style dressing. There are many variations of this salad however the main ingredients usually include:

  • A bed of lettuce such as iceberg lettuce or cos lettuce
  • Celery
  • Apples
  • Walnuts
  • Lemon juice
  • Mayonnaise or Greek style yogurt

Other popular additions to the salad include:

  • Grapes
  • Chicken
  • Turkey

Now you may be thinking- a creamy dressing… is that really healthy? It all comes down to how much you use. Remember you do not need a lot of dressing to make a salad tasty. Just enough to lightly coat it- not drown it. This salad is a source of vegetables (lettuce), fruits (apples and grapes) and protein (walnuts) and can make a nice change from the basic garden salad. Try having it for lunch with some lean chicken or egg, or perhaps even throw in some chickpeas (never tried it but could work!), or have it as a side with a Barbeque.

A salad with a creamy dressing is best reserved for being made at home where you can control what goes in your dressing and how much. So try making this yourself at home.
