American Airlines Main Cabin Extra (domestic) Food Review – Charleston, South Carolina to Washington Reagan, DC

Time to check out American Airlines Main Cabin Extra on a short domestic flight from Charleston to Washington DC (Reagan). I always take an opportunity to check out food served in any class when flying and so when the opportunity arose to experience American Airlines Main Cabin Extra I thought why not try it.

Main Meal Service

No pre-take off drinks were served. Once in the air cabin crew came around and handed our a packet of two Biscoff biscuits and offered a drink. I chose water but I saw other passengers had soft drinks and beer. Only one round of drinks was offered on the flight and I did not see anyone ask for a second drink so unsure if one would have been provided. The website is a little vague on this as it specifies complimentary drinks with a footnote mentioning number of drinks may be limited. There was no choice with the biscuits even though the website said either pretzels or Biscoff biscuits. There was also a for purchase menu which included a cheese plate and a couple of other snacks.

Nutrition comment

I did not like the taste of these biscuits. I know many people love a Biscoff biscuit but for me the taste is too sweet. Taking a look at the packaging shows the ingredients are basically flour, vegetable and two types of sugar with some salt and cinnamon. While I understand this is basically economy with a few extra perks added, and therefore not to expect too much re the food (especially since First Class only offers a basket of prepackaged snacks – see my review) – it would be really great if a fresh fruit or vegetable snack could be offered alongside the biscuits.

Last word on American Airlines Main Cabin Extra (domestic)

For the extra charge (starting at US$20) I don’t think the extra money is worth it – i.e. for a biscuit and cup of cold water (not even a bottle of water). Perhaps if you were ordering another type of drink the cost would add up more. Now I know there is more to the American Airlines Main Cabin Extras than just the food (e.g. being in first few rows of economy with extra leg room, boarding earlier etc) however I get many of these perks already with my Oneworld status and so for me it did basically come down to the cookie and cup of water.

Allergy information was provided on the biscuit package.

There was also a statement about nut allergies in the flight information booklet in each seat. American Airlines says while it does not serve peanuts on board they may serve other nuts/have products with other nuts in them. Also they cannot prevent passengers from bringing nuts on board.
