Cathay Pacific Business Class Food Review – Hong Kong to Melbourne

It was good to be back experiencing Cathay Pacific Business Class food as when I previously flew with them a few years ago I really enjoyed the food experience. While my flight left late in the evening at midnight I was still interested to experience their food service, so I stayed awake and ordered supper. Since it was a late night flight I thought the main meal experience would then be the second meal service, however to me it was just a standard breakfast with nothing memorable about it. Unfortunately on this flight, my experience with the food wasn’t as great as my last one – I was left with a feeling of so-so regarding the food.

Cathay Pacific Business Class Menu – Hong Kong to Melbourne

On this 9 hour flight they were serving supper and breakfast in business class. Supper was simple – only a main course with no starter or side dish. Breakfast was served before landing and was required to be pre-ordered.

Main Meal Service

I chose the burger for supper, not because I like burgers on planes (quite the opposite actually), but I know burgers are becoming quite popular in onboard menus and so I thought people would like to see it. I had the Cathay Pacific burger a few years ago and so I thought I would give it another go. The salad (tomato and lettuce) was served on the side and the burger came with cheese, beef patty, zucchini pickles and onion. Doesn’t look to great does it? The cheese wasn’t melted as you can see and it wasn’t very warm. The chips (fries) were pretty awful – the texture was like a few days old chips that had been reheated in a microwave. The burger patty itself was nice and the zucchini pickles were really tasty. But the brioche bun wasn’t my favourite – it was dry. And I didn’t like having a bread roll served as a side – it was like the whole meal was basically bread! The tomato and lettuce also looked a bit sad on the plate.

Nutrition comment

My first thought was too much bread. Being a supper meal I understand why multiple courses weren’t served, however it would have been good to have a side salad on the tray service. To have a burger bun, fries and then a bread roll on the side wasn’t a good experience both in taste and nutrition. Being a late evening flight it would be good for travel wellbeing not to have a meal based on carbohydrates.

Second Meal Service

I chose to try both the Wellness Breakfast and the Light Breakfast – I ticked both boxes and waited to see whether I was told I could only chose one or the other. But the cabin crew never said anything and in the morning two breakfasts were balanced on the tray. The Wellness Breakfast of bircher muesli was delicious. It had a lovely light coconut flavour. The Light Breakfast of egg and chorizo wrap was not very nice at all.

The wrap itself was disappointing nutritionally as it was mainly just a large wrap and without much filling (egg and chorizo) inside. It was good though that it was a whole wheat wrap – this helped provide additionally nutrients. The salad served on the side of the wrap was a standout. This helped provide approximately 1 serve of vegetables for the day.

Final comment Cathay Pacific Business Class Food – Hong Kong to Melbourne

I was underwhelmed with the Cathay Pacific Business Class food on this late evening flight. Maybe it was because it was a late evening flight and the last flight I took with them was a day time flight and I had loved the food! This food experience was just okay to me. The supper looked like it couldn’t have been bothered and they were just serving something because they felt they had too. Breakfast was standard – the menu concepts seemed nice but execution wasn’t the greatest.

NOTE: All pictures of Cathay Pacific Business Class food are my own and I review the food from the menu I was given and the food I ordered on my flight. There may be different options available at other times.
