Cathay Pacific Business Class Food – Melbourne, Australia to Hong Kong

It’s nice to be checking out Cathay Pacific business class food again now all the covid restrictions have been lifted. Last time I flew them was December 2021 where international borders had only just opened in Australia and entry into Hong Kong was still not permitted. So it was great to be able to see what Cathay Pacific business class food is like now it is getting back to normal.

First Meal Service

This flight was an early morning flight, taking off at 7.30am from Australia. I was a little disappointed at this as I don’t really like breakfast foods on planes and so imagine my delight to see that the first meal on the flight was not the main meal. There was breakfast offered after takeoff but the main meal was lunch which was served midway through the flight.

Prior to takeoff water, apple juice or orange juice was offered. After takeoff, orders were placed both for breakfast and the main meal.

There were 4 breakfast meals offered ranging from a light breakfast to heartier dishes. I chose the scrambled eggs which was served with a slice of bread, avocado, smoked salmon, roasted tomatoes and rocket. The meal also came with pastries and a fruit salad.

Nutrition Comment

The scrambled eggs breakfast was fairly nutritious for a meal in the air. Smoked salmon is a rich source of omega -3 fats which have anti-inflammatory properties, and avocado is a rich source of monounsaturated fats which are considered healthy fats. The avocado seemed to have a hint of lemon/lime and it also seemed like it was real, smashed avocado (rather than a processed avocado dip). The slice of bread was a white sourdough which is healthier than plain white bread. It was thin and small which was good since there were pastries also served with the meal. The eggs were a bit too buttery for my liking. The rocket was crisp and fresh. The muffin was a passionfruit flavour but I didn’t eat it as I was full from breakfast and don’t eat pastries for breakfast as they are not very nutrient dense and usually a source of added sugar not needed.

Main Meal Service

The main meal service was served about 4-5 hours into the flight. I chose the salmon tataki for a starter and the beef tenderloin for the main. The salmon melted in my mouth (being just seared lightly on each side), and had a lovely coating which tasted like it had sesame seeds in it. It was served with cucumber, radishes and wasabi mayonnaise. The beef tenderloin was cooked through but was very tender. The potato gratin was not too cheesy and was well cooked with the potatoes really soft.

Nutrition Comment

The salmon tataki dish was very nutritious – again rich in omega 3 fats. There was only a very small amount of mayonnaise which was enough to provide a lovely flavour but not extra fat and calories for no reason. The steak was fairly lean with a small amount of jus. The potato gratin was not too cheesy, again adding flavour but not making it too heavy.

Final thoughts on Cathay Pacific business class food

I was really impressed with the Cathay Pacific business class food – delicious and fairly nutritious. I was also quite surprised with the variety on offer and the quality of the food. For an airline that was pounded during the pandemic due to border closures, costing cutting through food in business class was not very obvious unlike other airlines I have flown. Great work Cathay Pacific for ensuring food quality and choice remain important.
