Flying to the United Kingdom I decided to experience Singapore Airlines Business Class Food, leaving on a 7.30pm flight from Melbourne, Australia and transiting through Singapore and onto a Singapore Airlines flight to London. And I really enjoyed the 7 hour flight to Singapore – there was a lot of attention to detail in regards to food and service which was nice to see. I did not feel they were trying to rush because it was only a 7 hour flight.
Singapore Airlines Business Class food menu – Melbourne to Singapore
The flight was serving dinner and a refreshment before landing in Singapore (which was approximately midnight Singapore time, or 2am Melbourne time). I opted to pre-order my main meal to experience this service, even though to be honest I would have been happy with any of the main meals that were on offer. I did not choose Book the Cook as there were only 8 options available out of Melbourne and none of them really took my fancy. I actually thought the onboard menu meals sounded nicer. (Read an article on my Book the Cook experience).

Main Meal Service
Drinks were served prior to takeoff with juice, water and bubbles on offer. The cabin crew took drink orders for pre-main meal drinks, prior to takeoff. The pre-dinner drinks service was started promptly after takeoff with pre-dinner drinks served along with a small dish of nuts (almonds and cashews). The smoked salmon starter was delicious, however there was no choice of starter. It also only came with 2 tomato halves – a couple more surely couldn’t have been too hard. The dressing was place on top by cabin crew upon serving. I thought mine had a bit too much and so next time I will ask for it to be served on the side. The bread was served with the starter, however it was barely warm. It was served with butter with the choice of extra virgin olive oil. My pre-ordered meal of braised short ribs was served, with staff confirming this pre-ordered dish prior the the main meal commencing (the experience was seamless). And I have to say this was one of the most delicious meals I have had on a plane. The beef ribs were so incredibly tender the meat just fell apart. The red wine sauce was complementary to the dish, not drowning the dish in sauce but just enough for flavour. The mashed potato was also delicious – tasting and a texture like real mashed potato with some body to it (not processed so smooth it is like a paste). The roasted vegetables (zucchini, Brussel sprouts and pumpkin) were cooked well (the zucchini was a little mushy). I didn’t feel like anything sweet after this meal and so chose the cheese plate – it came with three cheeses, apricots, grapes and water crackers.

Nutrition comment
I was excited to see a smoked salmon salad on the menu – smoked salmon is a good source of omega 3 fats which have anti-inflammatory properties. The salad was lettuce, tomatoes, smoked salmon with some croutons. This was great for a night time flight since it was low in carbohydrates (I did not eat the croutons) which was important for me since I was flying throughout the night. I was hoping for it to have a few more tomatoes and other vegetables in it though. The roasted vegetables helped balance out the beef ribs which while tender (and delicious), can be quite a fatty cut of meat. There were Brussel sprouts included in the main dish which I did not eat as they are high in FODMAPs which may contribute to bloating, especially in sensitive individuals. And while the serve size was small I did not want to risk it since flying contributes to bloating too and I was to be flying for 24hours.
Second Meal Service
Landing into Singapore just before midnight (this was just before 2am Australia time) I didn’t really feel like eating, however I did chose a meal to see what the food was like, especially to see what the Asian style dish was like. So I did choose the dumplings and fried rice, however I didn’t really like the dish. The fried rice did not have a lot of flavour and so it didn’t really match up with my reduced appetite.

Nutrition comment
The dumplings dish was served with quite a large amount of fried rice which is not mainly a low fibre refined carbohydrate. This type of dish is not good to eat when it is late into your ‘biological night’ which I was. I did not eat much since most of the dish was carbohydrate and I did not want to be eating too much carbohydrate that late in the evening (as this has a more pronounced and prolonged effect on blood sugar levels). It would have been good to have the meal be more balanced to reduce this glycemic load so late in the night. There was only a small amount of vegetables in the fried rice which again added to the glycemic load of the meal as it was mainly rice.
Last word on Singapore Airlines Business Class Food – Melbourne, Aus to Singapore
I loved the flight and the emphasis on food quality and service. I felt is was a lovely flight to settle into the experience – while it was only a 7 hour flight and a dinner flight at that, not once did I feel the service was being rushed, or that I was being rushed to eat. I could settle back, enjoy the food at my own pace and not have the different courses thrust upon me. It was a really well balanced flight where I could still catch a couple of hours sleep before landing into Singapore. As someone who usually flies a Oneworld airline through Asia to Europe this flight has me pondering choosing Singapore Airlines Business Class again. In regards to nutrition there were some elements of the meals which were nutritious, however it would have been great to have more wholegrain options and also more vegetables (the salad certainly felt light on).
I had a long layover in Singapore and so spent some time sleeping in the Singapore Airlines Silver Kris Lounge before having a meal – you can see my review here.
